I got my "Wings" on the North American Harvard at No 3 Flying Training School, R.A.F. Feltwell. The Squadron Leader who gave me my final handling test was Len Trent V.C., D.F.C., a very charming New Zealander and the last serving holder of the Victoria Cross in the Royal Air Force.
I loved the Harvard with it's Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine, but with so little experience, I was very much in awe of it. I next flew it about 30 years later in New Zealand and I realised then what a wonderful aeroplane it is.
